The Mayor of Newham has spoken out after a man was found dead in a council-operated car park in Stratford.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE has released a statement in a bid to ease local concerns after a man was found dead in a car in the Stratford Centre car park yesterday (January 10).

She urged anyone with information about the "shocking discovery" to contact police.

"Understandably many local residents and businesses will be alarmed by the news, though the police have already arrested a man who is now in police custody," Ms Fiaz added.

"As well as increased police presence in Stratford, there will also be additional community safety officers in the area to provide further reassurance to our local communities in the coming days."

Mayor Fiaz confirmed she is in touch with Chief Superintendent Simon Crick as the murder investigation is ongoing.

The body was found by police responding to a report from a member of public concerned for the health of a person yesterday at 1.17am.

A man was arrested at a residential address in Hampshire, more than 100 miles from where the body was discovered.
