An Asda is set to replace a Co-op at a Hornchurch petrol station.

Co-op Food at Petrol Hornchurch, in Billet Lane, is set to become an Asda on January 19 this year, the latter chain announced yesterday (January 2).

The store is near Emerson Park train station, which is just two minutes away on foot.

The move is part of an Asda acquisition of more than 132 Co-op sites which have attached petrol stations.

Andy Perry, vice president of convenience at Asda, welcomed the Hornchurch Asda opening.

“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing our Asda value and quality to the Hornchurch community with the conversion of the Co-op site,” Mr Perry said.

“The roll out marks an incredibly exciting moment for our business and accelerates our presence in the fast-growing convenience market,” he added.

But Keith Webb, a Co-op shopper, said he would be sad to see the existing store go.

"I personally I will be sorry to see it go," Keith posted on Facebook.

"Such a great atmosphere from all and excellent goods."
