A man has been charged with terrorism offences after he was suspected to be preparing for an attack.

Alfie Douglas Coleman, 19, of Essex, was arrested in East London on Friday (September 29) as part of Met’s Counter Terrorism operation.

He was detained and taken into custody at a London police station where he will remain until Friday (October 13) after police sought two extensions from the court.

The investigation, supported by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), relates to extreme right-wing terrorism.

Coleman has since been charged on Wednesday (October 11) with preparation of terrorism acts, collecting information likely to be useful for terrorism, possession of a gun and some ammunition.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (12 October) next.

Commander Dominic Murphy, who leads the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, has said that while charges of this nature may be concerning to the public, there is any enduring threat to people.

He added: “Our officers work around the clock to identify and disrupt terrorist activity, but we can only do that with the public’s support, and we would ask them to continue to remain vigilant.

“If they see or hear anything that doesn’t feel right, then to get in touch. You won’t ruin anyone’s life, but you could help save them.”
