Some east London Wilko stores are set to close after the administrator failed to secure a rescue deal for the whole business.

Wilko home and hardware shops on East Street in Barking and Unit 10, The Mall in Dagenham will shut next week, the retail chain announced today (September 6).

The future of Romford, East Ham, Walthamstow, Ilford and Stratford branches has not yet been announced.

Barking's Wilko is set to close on September 12, as will the Dagenham store on September 14.

This comes a day after rival retailer B&M bought up to 51 other Wilko stores in a deal worth up to £13 million.

Edward Williams, joint administrator, said: “In the absence of viable offers for the whole business, very sadly store closures and redundancies of team members from those stores are now necessary."

More than 1,000 staff countrywide are losing their jobs while PwC remains in talks with parties interested in buying up the business.

It is understood that HMV owner Doug Putman is still in discussions with PwC over a possible deal to save a significant number of stores.
