A museum "created with and for young people" is set to open this weekend after a £13 million revamp.

Young V&A, formerly the Museum of Childhood until it closed for refurbishment three years ago, boasts a new look as well as its new name, and this paper was invited to take a sneak peek ahead of the public launch.

Aimed at the 0-14 age range, there appeared as much to engage my two-year-old as there was for the pupils from nearby schools who had also come along to use what was on offer.

My toddler loved exploring the interactive elements, which ranged from foam blocks and a spinning sandpit to the more traditional doll's house. A particular favourite was a small skate park model where finger-sized skateboards could be pushed around - older children may enjoy attempting to recreate their favourite tricks with it.

There is even the chance to explore the museum virtually through a specially-created Minecraft game, and a stage to let imaginations run wild.

Around 1,500 items from the V&A's collection are on display in cases throughout the museum, including many which may make parents feel nostalgic for their own younger years. There is also a 'mini museum' section where objects have been placed at toddler height to engage even the youngest visitors.

V&A director Tristram Hunt described the Grade II-listed venue as "the UK's first national museum created with and for young people".

He added: "Children will have their own extraordinary space for imagination, play and design. They will find it a joyful place to have fun, be creative and take inspiration from national collections which belong to the V&A."

It has been created with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, including ramp and lift access to the galleries, sensory bags and a changing places facility. Staff are also set to wear badges indicating the languages they speak so international visitors or those who do not have English as a first language can communicate in a way they feel more comfortable.

Young V&A will be open daily from 10am to 5.45pm from Saturday, July 1. It is located next to Bethnal Green Tube station, or is a short walk/bus ride from Whitechapel station if visitors require step-free public transport.
