Councillors in Elm Park have said they are “very sad" following a 77-year-old woman's death.

The woman was found with severe injuries at an address in Cowdray Way at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (May 2).

She died at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency services.

A man in his 70s was arrested by police on suspicion of her murder and he remains in custody.

Councillors from Elm Park ward expressed shock and offered condolences to the woman's family.

Cllr Julie Wilkes said it was “awful” news and hoped the police find out more about the circumstances.

Cllr Stephanie Nunn told the Recorder: “Obviously, we are very sad to hear of this and understand the police are still investigating."

Cllr Barry Mugglestone, who is also cabinet member for environment on Havering Council, said the woman's death was “very upsetting”.

He added: “We have been to the location and the police are there and we assured the neighbours as well.”  

The woman's family have been informed and a crime scene remains in place, police have said.

Det Supt Richard Vandenbergh said extra officers will be patrolling.

"Please do approach these officers and speak to them if you have any questions - they are there to listen to you and act on your concerns," he added.

Detectives are appealing for information as part of their ongoing investigation.
