Ahead of this week's elections, the Recorder runs through who is standing for election in Brentwood.

Elections are being held for 13 out of Brentwood Borough Council's 14 wards on Thursday, May 4.

The council is currently run by the Conservatives, who have 19 seats.

The Liberal Democrats are the second largest group with 14, followed by two for Labour and one Independent.

The leader of the council, Chris Hossack, who has been a councillor since 2003, will not be standing for re-election to his Hutton East ward seat.

He told Essex Live: "I've done it for 20 years. I turned 50 last year. You just start to re-evaluate and start to look at the future and ask what's next. And that is pretty much where I've come to.”

Polling booths will be open between 7am and 10pm and photo ID will need to be presented by all voters as per the new rules laid out by Election Commission (EC).

The name on the photo ID should be the same as the name used to register to vote, the EC website says.

Voters can cast their votes in person or by post. Those who cannot make it to the polling station or do not have a photo ID, can ask someone to vote on their behalf. The deadline for a proxy vote for this election has now, however, passed.
