A GP surgery in Hornchurch is to shut, the NHS has confirmed.

NHS North East London (NEL) has revealed South End Road and Stanley Road Surgery, headed by doctors Tania Rahman and Chi Yuen Tsoi, will close down by July 31.

A spokesperson for NHS NEL said the doctors decided to hand back their contracts to provide services.

The surgery has more than 5,000 registered patients on its books at the two branches.

These will now be moved to other nearby GPs, the spokesperson said.

They called the closure “disappointing news” for patients, adding: “We will do everything we can to support them to register with another practice close to where they live and to make this transition as smooth as possible."

Information events will be held in April for patients to address any questions, the spokesperson said.

Patients with particular concerns with registering at a new GP are being encouraged to raise these with the practice.

The spokesperson stated that there are 16 GP practices within 1.6 miles of the surgery that can take on new patients.

Patients have been sent a list of these practices to choose from, along with details of how to register.

Liz Cullen, 60, who has been visiting the GP practice for more than 11 years, was saddened by the announcement.

She said: “I never had problems getting an appointment, I never had a problem with the GP. This was just down the road, but now I will have to travel to the new GP."

Once it is closed in July, NHS NEL confirmed the premises will not be available for providing GP services.

The surgery was contacted for their response but refused to comment.

In 2020, a surgery in Rainham was shut down after the sole GP working at the practice retired.
