Two middle-aged women were arrested during a protest at a halal slaughterhouse in Upminster.

Six protestors, dressed in white boiler suits, were making a stand outside Romford Halal Meats, in Folkes Lane – which supplies lamb and mutton - at around 11am on Wednesday.

The 44 and 54-year-olds were arrested for criminal damage to an HGV.

Halal slaughter is considered inhumane by some animal rights groups, but argued to be virtually painless by Muslims.

Romford Halal Meats is ‘fully committed to the welfare of its livestock’, according to its website.

The women were interviewed and bailed to return to Romford Police Station, in Main Road, on August 24, pending further enquiries.
