Our guide to the weekend’s fixtures

Saturday

Conference South

Weston-super-Mare v Hornchurch

Urchins are set to make the long trip west this weekend, weather permitting.

But Jimmy McFarlane’s men will travel with confidence after recording two impressive wins on the road this week.

Leon McKenzie netted either side of a Frankie Curley goal in a 3-1 league win at Hayes, to take his season’s tally to seven, last weekend.

And Andy Tomlinson opened his account for the campaign in a 2-0 midweek win at Canvey, to book an Essex Senior Cup quarter-final date with Brentwood or Colchester.

McFarlane said: ““I’ve said all along I wasn’t panicking and once we got a few players back we’d be alright.

“We’ve played better away from home, which is a bit of a puzzle, but we are better on better surfaces.

“Weston will be tough, but they’re all tough in this league.”

Ryman Division 1N

Romford v Aveley

Boro welcome high-flying Millers to Ship Lane, smarting from their Essex Senior Cup exit at the hands of Barking.

Jack Barry, Matt Toms and a Lewis Francis penalty put them 3-1 up just past the hour mark, but the Essex Senior League Blues hit back to force a penalty shoot-out.

And the visitors kept their cool to convert all but one of their 10 spot-kicks in a marathon battle to win 9-8, as Romford’s Alfie Hilton and Michael Sammut saw efforts saved.

Aveley suffered penalty pain of their own in a Ryman League Cup tie at Thamesmead but currently lie in second place behind runaway leaders Maldon.

Boro have slipped into mid-table after recent postponements and boss Paul Martin said: “I wasn’t happy with the Cheshunt game being called off on Saturday. A few of us went over there and the pitch looked perfect.

“But we’ve got to pick ourselves up. You get the rub of the green sometimes and sometimes you don’t. It’s not nice when you’re not winning, that’s the reality.

“I want to play Aveley, whether I’ve got players out or not. Once they cross the white line, it’s up to them, we can only guide them in the right areas. If we turn up, we can get results. If we don’t, we’ll get turned over again.”
