Havering has one of the lowest rates of car crime in London, according to Metropolitan Police figures.

Consumer website HonestJohn.co.uk collated the offences recorded between October 2011 and September 2012 to reveal that Rainham and South Hornchurch are hotspots for vehicle crime in the borough.

The RM13 postcode area had 267 offences for every 10,000 vehicles - more than double the national average of 121.

Romford was next with a rate of 227 in RM1, followed by 226 in RM4, 220 in RM3, 217 in RM7 and 214 in RM12.

The safest area for car crime was Collier Row, where the rate was just 154.

In parts of central London, more than one in 10 cars were targeted.

Theft from a vehicle made up nearly half of all car crime across the country. Other common offences were criminal damage and theft of a car.

Honest John editor Daniel Harrison, editor of HonestJohn.co.uk, said he hoped the information would alert drivers to danger areas.
