Sky Bet League Two: Accrington Stanley 1 Dagenham & Redbridge 2

Two fine examples of counter attacking play from the Daggers helped them to a 2-1 victory at basement boys Accrington Stanley.

After a goalless first half Zavon Hines scored his first goal for the club after 56 minutes and five minutes later in a carbon copy of the opener Rhys Murphy made it two with his third goal in as many games.

Substitute James Gray made it an anxious injury time for the visitors when he poked home from close range, but they saw out three minutes of stoppage time.

Daggers made one change, but that was forced with Luke Wilkinson replacing the unavailable Scott Doe, while new signing Chris Dickson received international clearance in time for a place on the bench.

It was Daggers that started the better and with eight minutes on the clock home goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli was forced into a fine save to deny Zavon Hines following a great through ball from Rhys Murphy.

And from the resulting corner a miscued inswinger from Billy Bingham found Murphy who ran off his man only to see his shot blocked.

But up the other end Stanley went even closer when Lee Naylor’s inswinging corner found Peter Murphy at the front post and his header was flicked on to the post by the covering Jack Connors.

After the early activity, the game entered a quiet stage with both sides failing to create much in front of goal.

It did reignite towards the end though when a Hines free-kick from wide on the left was neatly flicked goalwards by Rhys Murphy, though Bettinelli gathered.

Both sides remained unchanged for the second half and this time it was the hosts that started to dictate the play.

Seamus McCartan headed into the side netting from a corner, though most of the home faithful thought it had found the net..

And despite the hosts being on top it was the Daggers that took the lead after 56 minutes.

Brian Saah launched the ball forward to Murphy who put the visitors on the attack and his fine ball to Hines found the winger unmarked and he slotted past the onrushing Bettinelli, who did get something on it , but not enough to keep it out.

Five minutes later and that lead was doubled in an almost carbon copy.

This time it was Hines who returned the favour for Murphy who was one-on-one with Bettinelli and he superbly slotted it home.

And to be truthful, Chris Lewington was rarely tested in the Daggers goal.

But he did have an anxious moment with five minutes to go when Wilkinson mis-timed clearance just nestled on the roof of the net.

Twice late on Daggers missed chances to make it three when new boy Dickson headed wide and Hines shot fiercely over.

An anxious final few minutes was in store for the Daggers for the second weekend in succession when Lewington spilt a Will Hatfield shot and James Gray poked home from close range.

And despite late pressure, the visitors held on to make it six unbeaten in all competitions.
