The pouring rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of a group of volunteers who gave up their Sunday to help clean up the borough.

More than 32 bags of rubbish were collected around Ilford’s Commonwealth Estate as part of CleanUp UK’s Beautiful Borough’s Project.

The charity encourages people to work together to help tackle littering and fly tipping in their local community.

The Redbridge Beautiful Boroughs Project launch took place on Sunday and was hosted by Cranbrook Baptist Church, Wellesley Road, Ilford, with help from members of Valentines Safer Neighbourhood team, church members and estate gardeners.

After their hard work the 40 volunteers were rewarded with refreshments provided by Ilford Sainsbury’s.

Faith leader at Cranbrook Baptist Church, Rev Jon Law said: “When CleanupUK mentioned this opportunity to us it made perfect sense.

“As a local church, we believe that it is vital for us to mimic the example of God and to be loving neighbours. Barriers are being broken down between people who never before had an opportunity to interact.”
