15 family members will be getting into the festive spirit on Sunday December 13 as they take on a 5km run dressed as Santas at Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club in memory of their loved ones.

Sheila Lee and her husband Mark will join 300 other merry Santas at the starting line in the club’s ground in Victoria Road, Dagenham, before they make their way through the surrounding streets.

The pair were inspired to don the famous red suits in memory of Sheila’s parents John and Sheila Norris, who were cared for by Saint Francis Hospice before they died of lung cancer.

Sheila said: “This is the first time I’ve taken part and it seemed like a really nice thing to do for both of our parents.”

She will be joined by other family members including son Paul Martin, his wife Rebecca and their children Sarah, 13 and Sophie, 8, who will be running in the charity race for the third time.

Rebecca, a pharmacy technician, said: “There is always a great atmosphere and a wonderful community spirit.

“As we are running around the streets there are people coming out of their houses to cheer you on. It is a fantastic cause and everyone is so friendly.”

Saint Francis Hospice is one of the largest adult hospices in the UK and provides its services completely free of charge.

Katy Woodgate, events manager at the hospice, said: “It doesn’t matter if you run, walk or crawl, it is guaranteed to be great fun.

“At the same time you will be supporting Saint Francis Hospice and helping us to continue providing excellent care to people affected by life limiting illnesses.”

To sign up to the run, visit sfh.org.uk or call the hospice events team on 01708 771 427.

Entry costs £10 for adults, £5 for children and includes a free Santa suit.
