Friends of Tom Jarvis, who would have turned 22 tomorrow, have rallied round to raise more than £1,000 towards his funeral.

The management trainee, who attended Robert Clack School in Dagenham, drowned close to San Antonio. His body was found by coastguards early on Saturday morning.

In a statement, Robert Clack headteacher Sir Paul Grant said teachers and pupils alike spoke very highly of Tom.

“It was clear to us all that he was a young man destined to achieve very well in life,” he said.

“His death is a truly tragic loss. All of our school community send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends at this desperate time.”

Tom’s friend, Peter Dorling, has set up a fundraising page to raise money for Tom’s funeral by taking part in the London to Southend bike ride.

He set a target of £500 but has surpassed his goal, with £1,273 donated so far.

Peter said: “It’s just a good way to raise a bit of money to make things a bit more manageable.

“Let’s all get together and show the world how loved he was!”

Friends of Tom have been paying tribute to him on social media describing him as “lovely” and a “true gentleman”.
