A 41-year-old who viciously attacked two men 20 years his junior with a hockey stick and a stool, leaving one with lifelong injuries, has been jailed for 13 years.

Snaresbrook Crown Court also handed Joseph McCarthy, of Petersfield Close, Harold Hill, a four-year concurrent sentence for a robbery during the same incident.

On the evening of July 19, McCarthy - who pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent - punched and kicked his first 21-year-old victim, who had been using an ATM, to the ground, before attacking a second who ran to the man’s rescue.

McCarthy and an accomplice – who has never been caught – then used hockey sticks to break into a nearby shop where the victims had sought refuge, and attacked them again, leaving one in hospital with a serious head injury.
