The new Boris administration is serious on tackling crime!

A new era of hope and optimism has begun in British politics with Boris Johnson taking over as our prime minister. It is not just on Europe that the new administration is getting things right, but also on tackling crime. Boris has announced that 20,000 extra police officers will be recruited across England and Wales.

This is a vitally important policy. Knife crime in across our country has hit its highest level since records began - this problem has been even more acute in London under the watch of Mayor Sadiq Khan.

This increase in violent crime in the capital also coincided with the police's reduced powers of stop and search.

Boris is tackling both of these problems: he's getting more police officers on the streets and he's also planning to increase their stop and search powers.

I'm delighted that our new Home Secretary, Priti Patel shares this perspective. She has rightly said that criminals should be able to "literally feel terror". She has gone on to point out that being tough on crime is a key principle of the Conservative Party - that's why she wants to increase empower our police forces so that they can properly crush this spate of violent crime. An extra 10,000 new prison places will also be created to relieve stress on our overcrowded prison system, which will also assist help rehabilitation efforts.

With many constituents telling me they are fed up with the soft sentences and the Crown Prosecution Service, has I am glad to see that the prime minister agrees that many serious violent or sexual offenders are coming out of prison long before they should, and tougher sentences are needed.

I know this will be welcome news to our borough.
