The workers and members of Habbit Shed, based at Abbs Cross School, in Abbs Cross Lane, Hornchurch, fear that they may be forced to close if they do not get more members and volunteers.

The voluntary group, which organises workshops and performances for young people, is looking for children aged seven to 21. It is also appealing for people to volunteer as co-ordinators.

Co-ordinator Lee Giles said: “Habbit Shed is a great little community and you can get to know a range of people from the group.

“We desperately need new members. If not, we will have to close because there will be no point in running the sessions without the children.”

Habbit Shed was formed in 2004 by Chickenshed Theatre Company in north London as part of a programme to encourage more inclusive theatre training and development projects in the rest of the country. The group was originally set up by teacher Sue Wilson, who was trained by Chickenshed.

She wanted to create a similar project for all children and young people regardless of their disabilities.

In September Sue decided to step down from the group.

Lee said: “We do not like saying that it is for disabled and able children, because we don’t like putting people in categories. It is for everyone.

Confidence

“But it is amazing the effect that drama can have on people. We have had some children who have been bullied and have joined the group and their confidence has just grown.”

Lee, 21, joined the group in 2004 and a year ago he became a volunteer.

He said: “Habbit Shed made me learn to view disabled people in a whole new light. I have realised that they are not to be looked down upon and they are just like everyone else.”
