Alexis said: “It’s a double-edged sword. Being her sister does make people sit up, but at the same time we are judged by the same standard at all times, and it makes more effort to establish an identity of your own, but we all have our crosses to bear.”

Despite the family relationship, she says it’s hard pursuing a singing career.

She said: “It’s very difficult to make a career in this industry, let alone for two people in the same family.

“But there is a lot of respect for her and her talent, and for what she has done. She has paved the way for a lot of artists to do the things that others wish they could.”

Gospel

Her show supports her debut single and album Speak Love/Life Lessons which she describes as a fusion of pop, jazz and gospel.

Alexis says she was destined to be a singer, but started in the industry as a songwriter. Her credits include songs for Beyoncé, and Jennifer Hudson, as well as jingles for advertising campaigns for AT&T, Diet Coke and McDonald’s.

She said: “It is a little frightening getting in front of an audience.

“Before I would just be able to stay in my dance studio wearing my basketball cap, but now I have to worry about how people perceive me and what I look like.

“It’s bigger than what I expected, but it’s exciting.

“I have seen it as an outsider, but to experience it as an artist is different and it is an eye-opening experience.”
