Sonisphere 2014 will return to the grounds of the Hertfordshire stately home over the weekend of Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.

The event will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first rock concert held in Knebworth Park.

The dates were confirmed this afternoon via social media, with postings on the Sonisphere Facebook page, tweets from the festival’s Twitter handle and a new poster on the event’s updated website home page www.sonisphere.co.uk

At 1.05pm today (Tuesday), the official Sonisphere Twitter account tweeted: “Being called into a meeting, Either I am being let go or something is afoot”

A few minutes later @Sonisphere tweeted: “Keep the 4th-6th July 2014 free! Planning a festival to celebrate 40 years of Rock Music at Knebworth. #sonisphere sonisphere.co.uk”

Sonisphere’s expected return after this year’s hiatus will inevitably spark speculation over possible headliners and rumours over the first 2014 line-up announcement.

The first Knebworth music festival – on July 20, 1974 – featured The Allman Bros Band, Van Morrison and The Doobie Brothers.

Since then the likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Queen, Genesis, Oasis, Robbie Williams and Red Hot Chili Peppers have all headlined the vast outdoor venue.

The inaugural Sonisphere took place in 2009 with Metallica and Linkin Park headlining the weekend camping festival.

Alice Cooper, Rammstein and Iron Maiden topped the bill the following year, with Biffy Clyro, Slipknot and thrash metal’s Big 4 – Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer – the major attractions in 2011.

However, the UK leg of the international touring festival was cancelled in 2012 just weeks after Queen featuring Adam Lambert, Kiss and Faith No More had been confirmed as headliners and tickets had gone on sale.

No official dates for Sonisphere 2013 at Knebworth were ever announced.

A statement from promoters Kilimanjaro last December said the UK festival was “taking a year off in 2013”.

The Welwyn Hatfield Times reported in the summer that Knebworth House’s Henry Lytton Cobbold was hoping to mark the venue’s 40th anniversary with some sort of concert.
