Alex Day, 22, stunned the music industry by reaching number four in the charts with his home-made single Forever Yours.

He said in December that he would listen to any offers that record companies wanted to make him.

But this week the former Emerson Park schoolboy said that he was unconvinced. The singer, who has built up a huge following on website YouTube, said he feels he can do everything that major labels can – and more.

He told the Recorder: “I’m still keeping an open mind. If something came along from a record label that can offer me things, I’d consider it.

“I had a few meetings and I asked them what they could offer me. They just said ‘we can take what you’re doing and make it bigger’.

“I asked how they would do it but they weren’t sure, but that I wouldn’t be able to release my own singles at the time I want.

“I made it clear that I wasn’t being rude but that there was nothing they could do for me that I wasn’t already doing.”

Writing on his official blog earlier this week he said the companies “would insist on me playing by their silly rules”.

He also revealed that he has just recorded a new song, a cover of Peter and Gordon’s 60s hit Lady Godiva, which will be released on April 1.

Alex said he will continue to produce music “because chasing impossible dreams, stealing whole days and doing things our way is fun”.
