Sir Geoff Hurst watches young footballers training session

Wickford-based club Essex Royals FC welcomed World Cup-winning England legend Sir Geoff Hurst MBE to their training session at Nevendon Park recently, where he signed autographs and chatted to the players during his visit to help promote the FA Community Awards presented by McDonald’s.

Former West Ham United favourite, Sir Geoff visited their session on Saturday as part of his work as a McDonald’s grassroots football ambassador. He watched training, chatted with the club’s players and staff and even had a kickabout with them. Hurst remains the only man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final as England won 4-2 against West Germany at Wembley in 1966.

Nominations close for the annual FA Community Awards on Friday 28th March at www.TheFA.com/YourGame. Volunteer-run clubs, dedicated coaches and loyal administrators from Essex could be recognised by The FA on a local, regional and national scale to continue the fine record the county has from previous years. The categories are:

● People’s Choice Award (Outstanding Contribution to Community Football)

● The FA Charter Standard Community Club Award

● The FA Charter Standard Development Club Award

● The FA Charter Standard Club Award

● The FA Charter Standard League Award

● Volunteer of the Year Award

● Young Volunteer of the Year Award

● Coach of the Year Award

To find out more about the awards, read about last year’s winners and nominate an individual, club or league, log onto TheFA.com/YourGame or visit essexfa.com for a printable nomination form. You can also follow @EssexCountyFA on Twitter and search for ‘EssexFootball’ on Facebook.
