The UK's leading greyhound trainers battle it out for honours at Sheffield

UK’s leading greyhounds go for glory

The UK’s leading greyhound trainers go head-to-head in an eight-race shootout to decide the Ladbrokes Trainers’ Championship winner for 2014 at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium tomorrow.

And in a meeting widely regarded as one of the best of the year, points really do make prizes.

Confined to the top six handlers in the previous year’s Trainer of the Year standings, champion trainer Mark Wallis leads the field and will be joined by ‘Derby King’ Charlie Lister, plus Chris Allsopp, Barrie Draper, Seamus Cahill and Paul Young.

Lister has won five of the last nine Trainers’ Championship meetings - in which each trainer has a runner apiece in eight races over different distances or categories (bitches, pups etc) - and Farloe Tango leads his team.

The Greyhound of the Year and St Leger winner has a two-from-two record at Sheffield and will be fancied to strike gold over 720m - but the legendary trainer has a warning for punters.

“Sheffield doesn’t really play to his strengths, it’s a track where you’re always on the turn. But he’s never lost there, and I think the greyhound public want to see him race - so we’re in!” said Lister.

“The Coral Regency at Hove remains his main early-season target, and he seems to love the gallop there.”

Wallis is a runaway leader in the current Trainer of the Year standings and has the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket winner Hometown Honey in his team, while Cahill’s eight-strong squad is headed by Racing Post Juvenile champion Droopys Odell.

Young’s team includes highly-rated youngster Jaytee China, while Allsopp includes his kennel flagbearer Daddy Knowsbest and Draper will be hoping home advantage counts for his runners headed by Glenpadden Bolt.

Points per race are scored: 10-7-5-3-2-1.

Latest betting (Ladbrokes): 4-9 Charlie Lister, 7-2 Mark Wallis, 6 Paul Young, 16 Barrie Draper, Seamus Cahill, 50 Chris Allsopp.
