Essex Spartans are hungry for the new British American Football League season, after holding their annual Super Bowl party at Rileys Sports Bar in Basildon on Sunday.
Despite the wintery conditions, the team turned out in numbers to watch the New York Giants upset the favoured New England Patriots 21-17 to be crowned this year’s NFL champions.
Billericay-based Spartans, who are currently in the middle of their pre-season training, enjoyed the hospitality laid on by Rileys, which included a large HD screen, surround sound and hot food.
The team held a raffle on the night and rose over £200, with some fantastic prizes on offer.
New home shirt sponsor Ed’s Easy Diner donated a £50 gift card, which was won by Spartan player Joe Venables.
Other prizes included 24 bottles of real ale donated by Wibblers Brewery from Mayland, a gift certificate from Mighty Oak Brewery in Maldon, a gift pack from Brentwood Brewery, a selection of American football merchandise from UK American Sports Store, and a selection of American football equipment from American Football UK.
“The entire Spartans organisation extends our deepest gratitude to Rileys Sports Bar for the wonderful hospitality they offered us,” said Spartans spokesman Steve Watson.
“We would also like to thank each and every one of the generous companies who kindly donated prizes to the team raffle and we hope everyone who attended the night had an enjoyable evening.”
The Spartans, who train at Hannakins Farm every Sunday from 11am, are now waiting to find out their 2012 schedule which is announced this month.

Kevin Mitchell has high hopes that his dream fight, a clash with WBO lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns, will take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground on the night of July 14.
