Harry Sims and Bart Lang celebrate their rally success

School friends combine to win season opener

Former Shenfield High School pupils Bart Lang and Harry Sims drove to victory in the first round of the BTRDA Rally First 1.0 Class on Saturday.

Lang, who lives in Fielding Way, Hutton, was in the driving seat, with Surrey University student Sims taking on the co-driver role in a stage rally for the first time.

The 19-year-old duo have been best friends since they met in school when they were just four and their friendship helped to make the new partnership run smoothly.

BTRDA Rally First is the entry level to national and international rallying, and takes place on Forest Stages throughout England over a nine month season.

Lang took part last year, finishing third in the national championship in his first competitive season.

Last weekend’s race in the Wyedean Rally started and finished in Chepstow, involving exciting runs through the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas.

Lang said: “We are determined to drive the handles off our little Micra this season! Last year was about learning and this year, while we are definitely going to have lots of fun, we want to be on the podium at every rally.

“Our aim this season is to take top spot in the National one-litre class.”

Lang works as a rally instructor at Essex’s Langley Park Rally School and it was thanks to their support that he got to compete.

“We took the car out to the Brands Hatch single stage rally a month ago, just as a test run, but I misjudged a chicane and put the car into a concrete block,” he added.

“It did quite a bit of damage and if it hadn’t been for the support and help of the Langley Park guys I wouldn’t have made the Wyedean.

“I’m really grateful to Simon and Tom Clark for getting me up and running again.”
