Top marks at badminton event

Coopers Company & Coborn left some of the country’s top public schools in the shade at the Harrow Five Badminton tournament.
The Upminster pupils went up against hosts Harrow, Eton, Haberdashe’s Aske and John Lyon, with each school entering three boys pairs for the under-19 doubles competition.
And Coopers won the most matches overall to claim the top prize.
Harry Cannons and Gopal Sagoo won all four of their matches to finish top in their group, while Sam Hampton and Jack Moseley won three of their four matches to place second in their group.
James Marigold and Jon Cheung won two out of four matches to finish third in their group and teacher Mark Duncan said: “We were privileged to be invited to the exclusive annual badminton tournament at Harrow School. It’s an incredible setting.
“It was a fantastic achievement against some of the top public schools in the country.
“The boys were an absolute credit to the school, and performed exceptionally well. The organiser said it was the highest standard of badminton she had seen in the event in recent years.
“We have been invited back to future fixtures and hope to defend the title next year!”
Meanwhile, the under-16 girls gymnastics team qualified for National finals in Stoke next month by winning their regional event at Harlow.
All girls performed in floor, vault and group routines and the successful Coopers squad included Rachel Travell, Lucy Kingsman, Lauren Mitchell, Josephine Tang, Alyshah Moosuddee and Annabelle Hostler.
Kevin Mitchell has high hopes that his dream fight, a clash with WBO lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns, will take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground on the night of July 14.
