Girls wait to hear quarter-final draw
Shenfield High School’s under-13 girls booked their place in the quarter-finals of the National Cup with victory at Copleston School in Ipswich.
The early exchanges were fairly even in Suffolk, but Shenfield broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when Ellen Hoad got on the end of an Amy Moreton cross to score off the far post.
And Moreton produced another great assist for Shannon Drewe to add a second as she fired in from 18 yards before half-time.
Copleston applied more pressure after the restart and twice went close to a reply, before Drewe converted another Moreton pass to put Shenfield 3-0 up.
The influential Sophie Nyiro added a fourth, after beating three defenders and slotting home, before the home side grabbed a late consolation when their captain smashed a 20-yard drive past Ashley Holland.
But there was no denying Shenfield their 4-1 win and they are eagerly awaiting Monday’s draw to see who they will face in the last eight.
Coach Jamie Rigg said: “The girls have come a long way since September.
“They have been a pleasure to work with and with continued hard work we hope to progress beyond the last eight.”
CHRIS TOMLINSON’S dreams of conquering the long jump at the Commonwealth Games were wrecked by injury, WRITES BEN WELCH.
