Romford pupils are pride of Havering

Royal Liberty School were crowned Havering Indoor Rowing champions after a close battle with borough rivals at Havering Sixth Form College.

The team event sees students from each year group racing for points and culminates in a relay race, with pupils from all five years competing.

PE teacher Paul Humphries said: “It all came down to the relay at the end and our boys’ power and determination was the difference.

“Also the way our students work together, and the way older students such as Seb Adams and Paul Stubbington help and support the younger guys, was perfectly demonstrated in that final race.”

Daniel Hitchings, Eko Ohakasim and Seb Adams all won medals in their individual races, but Humphries added: “All of the squad played a huge part in an excellent team effort.”

Frances Bardsley came out on top in the girls competition, as the championships doubled up as a trial for Havering’s London Youth Games squad.

The event was staged with help from London Youth Rowing, who this week announced Olympic champion Mark Hunter MBE was joining their organisation in a full-time role.

Hunter, a pupil at Bower Park School during his own childhood, represented the borough at the London Youth Games before going on to win Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and silver at the London 2012 Games.

Hunter said: “London Youth Rowing is an organisation that delivers time and time again. I love what they do and wanted to play my part.”
