Marshalls Park 36 Abbs Cross 29
Marshalls Park’s Year 9 boys began the new term with a derby win over Abbs Cross last night.
They dominated the first quarter to build an 18-5 lead, after some great play by Robert Ager, Harry Potts, Johnny Fisher, Ryan Smith and Matt Whistler.
Debutant Harry Woodger sunk a free throw in the second quarter, but Abbs hit back to close the gap to five points.
Coach Humphrey Long’s half-time team-talk made Marshalls more determined to win and they made a strong start to the third quarter.
Smith used his height and strength to score six points, assisted by Potts and Fisher.
But Abbs kept fighting back, with a great three-pointer and four lay-ups from their point guard to keep Marshall’s winning margin in single figures.
Ager took the MVP award for Marshalls, who had players missing, after scoring 13 points and Daly and Whistler added eight apiece.
Long said: “It’s a great start to the new year and the boys are getting better and better.”
Team: Reyen El Hafidi, Matthew Whistler, Kieran Daly, Robert Ager, Reece Povey, Harry Potts, Johnny Fisher, Henry Burke, Jonty Mullis, Ryan Smith, Nick Middleton, Harry Woodger, Paul Aylett (manager).
