Upminster pupils shine in badminton fixture
Coopers Coborn pupils served up a treat after being invited back to the prestigious Harrow School for a badminton fixture.
Travelling from Upminster with an under-18 and under-14 team for their first fixture of the season, the Coopers pupils put up a brave fight against their hosts.
Nine of the matches went the full distance, with the new doubles pairings all playing well in the older fixture.
Felix Ngooi and Harry Cannons combined in one pair, while Gopal Sagoo joined forces with newcomer Thushar Jitesh and Harjas Sagoo teamed up with Callum Taylor-Downes to record victories in their group.
Year seven pupil Jitesh was making his debut for the school, having claimed the Essex under-13 doubles title and reached the singles semi-finals the previous weekend.
Jitesh also recently placed highly in the National under-11 singles and is seen as a real prospect for the future.
Tobi Dunlea and Flynn Astbury recorded a tense 24-22 win in their under-14 doubles match, while Oliver Morter and Tom Tevenan also combined well.
Coopers showed their strength in the under-18 singles, with victories sealed by Cannons (21-18), head boy Jonathon Murphy (21-19), Harjas Sagoo (21-19) and Taylor-Downes (21-19) as they held Harrow to a 4-4 draw.
The under-14 team worked very hard in their singles event with Astbury pushing his opponent all the way and only narrowly missing out with the final score being 21-19.
Teacher Mark Duncan said: “On the minibus the boys were all excited as they had been watching the Sky One documentary and were on the look out for places and students they had seen on TV!.
“Overall it was a brilliant fixture. Harrow were very complimentary saying that we were the most competitive and toughest team they had played against so far.
“It was a very good opener to the season and we have been invited, once again, to their yearly 5-School Badminton event and will be returning for another fixture in March.
“Hopefully, with even more training we can edge the victory then.”
