Students honoured at awards night
Bower Park School pupils have been impressing in their sporting pursuits in recent weeks.
Owen Flindall was named sportsman of the year at their annual awards night last Wednesday, while Amy Nicholls took the sportswoman of the year prize.
The Year 11 badmintion squad claimed team of the year honours, while the school took two gymnastics teams to Regional Championships at the Lady Eleanor Holles School in Middlesex.
Bower were the only comprehensive school to compete in the floor and vault competition and students performed well to finish fourth in the main event and second in the B string group.
The Year 9 boys football squad maintained their unbeaten run this season with a 5-1 win over Albany, but the tables were turned in a Year 7 meeting.
Shane Flindall and Ryan Whitcombe impressed for Bower in a 3-1 defeat.
The Year 8 girls netball squad battled to a 2-2 draw with their Hall Mead rivals, meanwhile.
But the Year 8/9 squad were edged out by a single goal in their match.
n St Joseph’s Primary School in Upminster are preparing for their big day out at the Arsenal Academy Dome next week.
They are chasing an Essex 7-a-side double, with their under-11 girls squad due to battle it out for honours, along with Dagenham’s Godwin School among others, on Tuesday.
And the boys are set to go up against Churchfields (Redbridge) and other finalists on Thursday.
Mark Pettini kept his cool to see Essex to their second LV= County Championship Division Two victory of the season by beating Glamorgan by five wickets with seven balls to spare at Cardiff.
