Havering Cup: Frances Bardsley 5 Redden Court 2

Redden Court’s under-14 girls had to settle for runners-up medals in their Havering Cup final against Frances Bardsley at Hornchurch.

The Harold Wood pupils were two goals down inside 10 minutes, despite an excellent save by Emelia Kendrick, but began to use the ball well after overcoming early nerves.

A slick move on the right involving Sophie Sands, Emily Diwell and Scarlett Jacks gave Court their first chance to get in behind the Frances Bardsley defence and gave them confidence.

Jacks had a great opportunity to reduce the deficit after good work by Sands and Emily Roofe on the left, but could not get the telling connection.

Frances Bardsley then turned defence into attack and went on to score their third goal from a corner.

Jacks broke from midfield to go one on one with the keeper, but could not take her chance, and Diwell broke into the box to meet a cross from Sands, but her header was saved.

Frances Bardsley added a fourth just before half time, leaving Court with a moutnain to climb in the second half.

But they produced a spirited display to ensure they took the honours after the restart, with Grace Roberts impressing at centre-back with excellent interceptions and wise use of the ball.

Katie Hawkes also caught the eye in midfield, while Sands gave the Frances Bardsley defence problems and eventually got her reward to make it 4-1.

Frances Bardsley replied soon after with their fifth, but Court kept pushing and creating chances and Sands pounced on a misplaced pass to finish superbly for her second.

Teacher Jenny Canty said: “Although the Redden Court squad did not receive winners medals on this occasion, they thoroughly deserved their runners-up medals.

“Their strong finish to the game gave them the confidence and belief that they will be back in the final next season!”

Squad: Emelia Kendrick, Louise Banham-Scott, Emily Diwell, Freya Duffy, Josie East, Charlee Harrop, Katie Hawkes, Emily Roofe, Scarlett Jacks, Alanah Jefferies, Grace Pickford, Grace Roberts, Kristy Robinson, Sophie Sands, Robyn Smith, Hannah Wood.

n Redden Court’s year nine students Dan Parker and Patrick Robinson helped Havering clinch the Essex Schools title with a 5-1 win over Chelmsford & Mid Essex at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Both made valuable contributions to the district squad’s successful campaign, with Parker on target in the final at Victoria Road as Connor Hartwell cheered on from the stands having broken his leg earlier in the season.
