Romford on cup trail, rivals return to league action

Saturday
RFU Intermediate Cup
Romford & GP v Aylesford Bulls
Park will try again after seeing their tie fall victim to the wintry weather last weekend.
Beaten 18-5 when these sides met in the regional final last season, coach Mark Collins is hoping home advantage counts for something at Crow Lane.
Park are keen to set the record straight, having seen their 14-game winning streak brought to an end in London Two North East before the cold snap.
Collins said: “We’re looking forward to a fantastic battle. It’s rare to draw the same side the year after, but we’ll do our usual preparation and hopefully do our job and nick it.”
London Division 2NE
Holt (14-0-1) v Campion (3-1-11)
Campion return to their relegation battle with the long trip to high-flying Holt.
They gave the leaders a run for their money at Cottons Park in late October, before falling to a slender defeat.
Holt raced ahead with a converted try and penalty, but Tom Dowling touched down in reply, with Rory Crisp’s conversion cutting the gap to three points.
There was no further scoring, though, and Campion have lost five of their eight matches since to remain in the fight for survival.
Upminster (8-0-7) v Sudbury (6-0-9)
Upminster will look to maintain their upward momentum as they welcome Sudbury to Hall Lane.
Three successive wins in January, over Holt, East London and Wymondham, took Upminster into the top half before the big freeze took hold.
And they will be looking to complete a double over their visitors from Suffolk, after a superb come-from-behind win on the road in late October.
Trailing 20-3 at half-time, Upminster saw the hosts reduced to 14 men before Tony Norton and Chris Davie went over for tries, converted by Jamie Pavitt.
A Pavitt penalty levelled the scores and he then went under the posts, from Dan Cuerden’s pass, for a late converted try to seal a 27-20 victory.
Essex Division 1
Old Cooperians (4-2-5) v Maldon (8-0-3)
Inconsistent Cooperians are due a win, if their form this season is any guide.
It has been a clear case of some you win, some you lose for the old boys, who slipped to a last-gasp 33-31 defeat against Millwall in their last outing before the big freeze.
Before that, in reverse order, they had beaten high-flying Billericay (18-14) and Pegasus (24-16) either side of the Christmas break.
And before that, they had lost back-to-back games against Old Brentwoods and Bancroft.
They slipped to a 29-13 defeat at Maldon in late October and their record for the season as a whole is D-L-D-W-L-W-L-L-W-W-L so what happens this weekend is anyone’s guess!
Kevin Mitchell has high hopes that his dream fight, a clash with WBO lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns, will take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground on the night of July 14.
