St Mary’s Lane outfit beat Barking at home last weekend

Pat Reed wants Old Cooperians to generate some momentum with a victory at Maldon in London Three Essex on Saturday, writes Ned Keating.

The St Mary’s Lane club collected their first victory of the season on Saturday with a 38-24 success at home to Barking.

The key now is for Coops to build on that triumph with another victory on the road this weekend.

And head coach Reed wants his team to impress once again as they bid to embark on a strong run of form in the league.

“It would be nice to build some momentum with another win, but the important thing is we deliver another good display,” he said.

“Early on in the season, all of the clubs in this division will be looking for good performances and we’re no different.

“As long as the boys continue to enjoy their rugby, I’m sure the good performances and good results will continue.”

Last weekend saw Coops earn their first triumph of the term with a fine display against Barking.

After losing 30-27 at borough rivals Campion on the opening day of the new campaign, Reed had wanted a response from the St Mary’s Lane club and that is what he got.

Coops claimed maximum points by scoring more than four tries in the triumph and Reed was pleased with the success.

“The game went as expected with Barking looking to dominate through their pack, but we were able to hold our own in that area,” he added.

“That allowed us to score some good tries through the backs, and our defence and midfield did great too.

“We’re off the mark now, but nothing changes in terms of what we want to achieve.

“We want the players to continue enjoying their rugby, continue to play with a smile on their face and hopefully that gets us the win.”

Off the field, the day was a great success for Coops and Barking as they raised funds for St Francis Hospice, which both clubs have nominated as their chosen charity for the season.

As past of the fundraising efforts, almost 40 women attended an afternoon tea on the day and Reed said the success far exceeded any expectations Coops had.

It is expected the St Mary’s Lane club will put on more fundraising initiatives throughout the course of the campaign as they look to raise plenty for St Francis Hospice.
