Woodford player-coach Tom Redfern felt his side lost the game rather than Romford & Gidea Park winning it, as they began the London Two North East season with defeat at Crow Lane.

Redfern was the first to admit it was a game of two halves, and they went into the break in buoyant mood with the scores at 7-7 thanks to a try from David Buckton, which was converted by Redfern himself.

But the second-half showing disappointed the player-coach as Woodford let the game get the better of them as they opened up with a defeat despite another converted try from Rellon McRae.

“It was a game of two halves. We defended well in the first half, put them under lots of pressure and put the ball in the right areas which resulted in our try and in the second half it got away from us for a number of reasons,” said Redfern.

“We let decisions that we couldn’t control affect us. That frustrated us and it created a bit of a domino effect. It is disappointing obviously, but to us it felt like we lost it rather than they won it.

“They would probably disagree such is the nature of sport, but to go in 7-7 at half time away from home in the first game of the season and then lose the game 38-14 is tough.

“We were there or thereabouts for quite some time, but the weather turned 10 minutes into the second half and we did not deal with it as well as they did.

“Their number 10 just kicked the ball in the right areas and put us under pressure. We had been doing that, but just stopped.”

Despite the loss, Redfern was pleased with their defensive showing in the first 40 minutes, but admits there are areas they need to work on ahead of hosting early league leaders Old Cooperians on Saturday.

“There is a lot for us to learn from in terms of playing in those conditions and performing for 80 minutes,” he added.

“It got away from us last weekend, as it did for the second team when they lost late on having led all the way up until that point against Eton Manor on Saturday.”
