London Div 3NE: Upminster 23 Campion 24
Campion earned local bragging rights with a hard-fought derby win over Upminster at Hall Lane.
It represented a third successive victory for Campion, who were promoted from Essex Division One last season, and a first loss of the new campaign for Upminster, in their 50th anniversary year.
Rory Crisp’s penalty put Campion ahead but the hosts gained the upper hand with a converted try from Daniel Smith and two Tom Simpson penalties.
But Upminster prop Dave Langley was sin-binned and Mitch Bogard touched down after good work by Stephen Canny with Crisp converting to make it 13-10.
Upminster saw Mark Everitt yellow carded after the restart and Charles Baker and Oliver Waugh went over to put Campion 24-13 up.
But Upminster produced a late rally to close the gap to a single point, with Chris Davie and Niko Mauvuya scoring tries in the corner.
The hosts could not add difficult conversions, though, and were denied a winning score by Luke Maguire’s fine tackle.
Grant Lowe and Sean Davis impressed for beaten Upminster.
Old Cooperians celebrated their first win in the London League with a 23-20 triumph at Old Brentwoods.
Andy Dennis opened the scoring with a penalty and, after Brentwoods replied with a kick of their own, added a conversion after Pat Reed went over from Matt Carter’s pass.
Brentwoods hit back with two converted tries to lead 17-10, but Kayode Awobowale’s try was converted by Dennis before the break to get Coopers back on terms.
The two sides traded penalties after the restart and Dennis added his fifth kick to clinch victory for Coopers.
Romford & Gidea Park picked up a losing bonus point in their London One North clash at Ruislip, after going down 29-22 in west London.
Christine Ohuruogu and Mo Farah have been nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
