Brentwood Eels made a triumphant start to life in the senior leagues by beating North Herts Knights 74-22 on Saturday.

Man of the match Joe Heavey ran in four tries, as youngsters Callum Whitcombe and Preye Kongha added braces and Jo Jones, Chris Suker, Jake Yellop and Alfie Hill were also on the score sheet.

Lawrence Haywood capped a great goal kicking display with a try of his own as the Eels proved slippery customers on a fantastic debut.

After a strong carry by Anthony Sherwood, Haywood and Whitcombe provided support for the latter to claim the club’s first competitive score.

But Sherwood was forced off injured to be replaced by Josh Woodcock, before Heavey and Kongha ran in tries to make it 16-0 after 10 minutes.

The visitors hit back with a try of their own before fine backs moves led to scores for Yellop and Suker.

But the Knights added two more tries to make it 26-16 before Haywood and Heavey took control and combined for four tries to make it 50-16 at half time.

Heavey had to go off injured, but Kongha produced a superb pick and go to run almost 80 metres for a super solo try, before Whitcombe and Hill went over.

Jones was rewarded for his great work rate with the final Brentwood try, as Suker showed great defensive skills to deny the visitors a late reply.

Eels welcome North Herts Crusaders to Brentwood Rugby Club for a cup tie tomorrow (Saturday, 2.30pm).

Eels: Callum Whitcombe, Preye Kongha, Chris Suker, Jake Yellop, Joe Fennessy, Lawrence Haywood, Joe Heavey, Anthony Sherwood, Andy Parkyn, Sean Jones, Tom Riches, Jason Lindsay, Jo Jones, Josh Woodcock, Toby Hind, Mike Swaine, Calvin Bradley, Cameron Gray, Alfie Hill, James Mavelia, Billy Mullen.

n Brentwood’s under-12s and under-13s surpassed expectations at the national Leeds Rhinos Challenge.

Both sides proved solid in defence and played some great rugby against tough and physical opponents.

For many of the Brentwood youngsters it was their first taste of competitive action, but they took some notable scalps, surprising sides and drawing praise from the Leeds academy coaches.
