Gale Street outfit lost 27-24 at home on Saturday

Craig Ratford feels fitness played a crucial role in Barking suffering a narrow 27-24 defeat at home to Campion in London Three Essex.

The Gale Street club slipped to a fifth league defeat of the season at home to their local rivals.

Barking had led by as much as 17-3 at one stage before Campion produced a stirring fightback to triumph.

And attack coach Ratford believes the defeat may have been in part down to the Gale Street club’s fitness levels.

“It was a good game to play in as there was a contrast in styles with Campion trying it play entertaining rugby and us trying to keep it in the forwards,” he said.

“In the end, I think our lack of a bench and our fitness cost us the match. We played well in the most part, but we lost control at a crucial time and Campion capitalised.”

There were positives for Barking to take despite the defeat, including their display at set-pieces.

And Ratford believes the good work of the pack is something the Gale Street club can build upon in the coming weeks.

“We dominated at the scrums and line-outs, but we’re being helped by being able to consistently name the same pack,” he added,

“It’s definitely a positive for us to take from the game and it is a good platform to work from, but we need that for 60-70 minutes which is something we’re getting close to.”

The defeat to Campion was a second narrow loss in succession for Barking after a 24-20 defeat at Ilford Wanderers the previous week.

But Ratford says the narrow losses show that the Gale Street outfit are now too far away from where they need to be if they want to start stringing a good run of results together.

“Our last two games have both been defeats in which we’ve taken a bonus point, so that goes to show how tight things have been,” he said.

“We’re going through a process at the minute and that is something the players are aware of.

“I’m confident we can get a winning habit at the club, but it takes time. The boys are still in good spirits and we all think it will change for the better soon.”
