Local amateur horse rider Rochelle Gilbert from Romford, Essex has become the 2014 Senior Show Jumping 65cm Champion at the Nettex Trailblazers Championships at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.

The Nettex Trailblazers Championships is a 10-day equestrian extravaganza which took place between July 25 and August 3. The Championships are the culmination of the hard work put in by every amateur rider that has qualified through the two rounds of qualification competitions at over 65 venues throughout the UK.

Gilbert won the Championship with her nine-year-old cob ‘Daddies Girl’. She has had the mare since she was 8 months old, her dad initially buying her for driving. They decided that driving wasn’t right for Dthe horse, so put her in foal. Gilbert’s father wanted to sell the mare but his daughter wouldn’t let him and broke her in as a four-year-old.

Shortly after, Gilbert suffered a nasty fall and fractured her spine, leading to her having a year off.

They took part in the Trailblazers Series in 2013, having a bit of a disaster in the warm up when ‘Daddies Girl’ got stuck in a jump. They went on to finish fifth in their class.

Gilbert, who does the horses in her spare time when she’s not working, qualified for the championships at Longwood Equestrian Centre and hopes to qualify again next year. “I’m a great fan of the series and can’t wait to take part again next year,” added the Romford rider.

With no registration fees for horse or rider and realistic entry fees, Trailblazers is increasingly popular right across the country. Classes at the championships include showing, dressage, showjumping and combined training.

First-round qualifying competitions are already underway for the 2015 Trailblazers National Championships.
