Romford Raiders defenceman David Oliver was happy to “do a job” for the team in their win over ENL Division One rivals Invicta at the weekend.

Oliver was named Raiders man of the match after an impressive display on the blue line in a 5-2 success, which kept Romford two points clear of title rivals Chelmsford at the top of the table.

But the home-grown hero was modest about his contribution, saying: “I was glad I got the nod to play and do my bit for the team and not concede.

“When the call comes you’ve got to be ready to take it.”

Oliver was paired with the experienced Tyrone Miller for the most part, as Billy Phillips served the second game of his four-match ban.

And he admitted he enjoyed the chance to link up with one of the senior members of the squad, adding: “I’m used to playing with Bomber (Andrius Kaminskas), but Ty is my favourite to play with.

“He’s so good, has played in top leagues and knows so much about the game.

“He gives you that extra confidence if you have a bad shift. He’s a breeze to play with, I love playing with him.”

Romford were playing their third match in four days, following their Essex Cup win over Chelmsford and Raiders Challenge defeat at the Isle of Wight, and twice took the lead through Anthony Leone and Matt Turner.

Invicta hit back to level on both occasions, but Raiders player-coach Danny Marshall made it 3-2 with a superb solo effort and further markers from Shaun Wallis and JJ McGrath sealed the points.

Oliver added: “For a defenceman, not to concede is crucial. Not one got past me and Ty on Saturday, or against Chelmsford last Thursday.

“I know sometimes we might moan about playing cup games, but any game against Chelmsford, in front of a packed house, is special. I thought that was a really good game, a great advert for our league.”
