Kickboxer Evans makes history in Wales

Romford’s Falcon Kickboxing Club saw Gareth Evans become their first fighter to hold senior British titles in two weight divisions, following success in Wales at the weekend.

Evans, the current IKF super-welterweight champion, travelled to Port Talbot to take on the experienced Andrew Davies for the vacant WKA British light-middleweight crown and the trip proved worthwhile as he won a hard fought contest.

The fight topped the bill at the Port Talbot Civic Centre, with the local crowd making a lot of noise as the first round progressed.

The two combatants made cautious starts, but Davies showed good mobility and kicking technique to edge the first round.

Evans changed tactics for the next round, quickly cutting off the ring and cornering his rival as both threw a lot more punches as the pace hotted up.

Davies attemped a number of big hooks, but Evans landed more scoring shots to gain the upper hand and started to dominate in the third round.

Evans unleashed a variety of shots and his tirless work ethic on a warm evening made life difficult for Davies.

Producing some of the best form of his kickboxing career in the fourth and fifth rounds, Evans worked well off a fast left jab and followed up with heavy punch and kick combinations.

When the final bell sounded, the two fighters showed their mutual respect for each other and the judges awarded the verdict to Evans, who is now in talks for opportunities at the next level.
