National League: Cardiff 5 London Raiders 0

Understrength London Raiders put up a brave fight, but went unrewarded in Wales last night.

Rocked by the departure of player-coach Danny Marshall, captain AJ Smith, import Jakub Klima and Perry Richardson less than 48 hours earlier, they held out until the 28th minute before Jamie Hayes put the hosts ahead.

Raiders gave a first start to George Alley in goal and he made 11 saves in a fairly even first period as the scoreline remained blank.

Hayes opened the scoring on a Cardiff powerplay, as Raiders captain Tom Davis served a tripping minor, and Luke Merrick made it 2-0 just past the midway mark.

But Hayes was then ejected with a match penalty for kneeing after a hit on former team-mate Ross Wilkinson.

And Raiders youngsters Stevie Dunnage and Bailey Wootton earned double minors for roughing, along with Hayes and Steve Newton, in the same incident.

Raiders import defenceman Vaclav Drabek was unable to convert a penalty shot while the score was still only 2-0 and Cardiff added three late goals to give the final scoreline more gloss.

Alex Madge netted the third in the 52nd minute, before Giovanni Raffaelli converted on a 5-on-3 powerplay, as Jacob Ranson and Drabek sat out hookinng and interference minors.

Jonathan Nash added a shorthanded fifth for Cardiff with just one second left on the clock to make it eight losses in a row for shortstaffed Raiders, who visit Bracknell tonight.
