Marshall’s men face first Essex derby
Raiders captain Jason Buckman says his side are ready to renew their rivalry with Chelmsford this weekend, despite it no longer being a true Essex derby.
The club’s summer relocation to Lee Valley, following the closure of their Rom Valley Way rink, and change of title leaves Raiders with their landlords, Haringey and Streatham as closer capital rivals.
But the long-running history of their battles with the Chieftains means those fixtures will always remain special, with former teammates Matt Turner and Julian Smith now lining up for their rivals.
Buckman said: “I’m sure the rivalry with Chelmsford will be renewed under London Raiders on Sunday.
“It’s pretty obvious Gary Clarke has put together an impressive squad this season, along with some ex-Romford players.
“But it’s going to be important not to think too much about rivalry or playing against former teammates.
“We have to play a sensible game and shut down areas Chelmsford are strong in.
“We have proven already this year we can compete against quality offensive teams, so there is no reason we can’t adapt to get a result in Chelmsford.”
Danny Marshall’s men skated to a 5-2 home win over Invicta, who include former import Juraj Huska in their ranks, two weeks ago and came from four goals down to earn a draw in Streatham the following night.
But they were left without a game last weekend and return to action at Bracknell tomorrow (Saturday), where Buckman is expecting a significant test.
He added: “We’ve got a challenging weekend coming up. Bracknell are always tough in their own rink.
“They have a good group of young, fast players and play to disciplined systems, so we will have to be ready after our weekend off.
“We have lost our fair share of points over the years in Bracknell with Romford, so it will be nice to put that jinx to bed with London and get a result this Saturday.”
