National League: Raiders 2 Streatham 1
Raiders came from behind to earn a hard-fought win over the Redskins in Lee Valley last night.
Beaten 4-1 in Cardiff on Saturday, when they only had 10 players available due to suspensions incurred in the previous weekend’s draw at Chelmsford, Raiders faced a delayed start as a Lee Valley juniors match overran.
The National League Division One action got underway just before 8pm and Raiders fell behind in the 10th minute as Streatham’s Canadian import Sean Scarborough struck.
Scarborough clashed with Raiders defenceman Billy Phillips, one of five players returning from a one-game ban, at the start of the second period and picked up a 10-minute misconduct penalty on top of the roughing double minors both were assessed by referee Blaine Evans.
And Raiders drew level while Scarborough was sidelined, just past the game’s midway mark, as man of the match JJ McGrath beat Will Sanderson on assists from stand-in blueliner Tom Davis and captain Jason Buckman.
Redskins had the slight edge on shots (24-18) at the end of the second period, but could not find a way past Euan King in the closing frame as he turned aside all 12 efforts that came his way.
Sanderson was beaten once more, though, as Billy Phillips fired home the winner following good link-up play between player-coach Danny Marshall and Frankie Harvey to seal the points as Nathan Pollard picked up the player of the month award for Raiders.
Buckman said: “We’ll take a 2-1 win after the effort the lads put into Cardiff.”
Goalie King added: “Guess it wasn’t pretty but we got two points.”
