Oliver: One of most frustrating games ever

Raiders defenceman David Oliver is still trying to come to terms with his side’s National League defeat at Cardiff at the weekend.

Danny Marshall’s men were edged out by the odd goal in nine in Wales, after a poor start saw them fall three goals down in the opening period.

Louis Lockwood, Robert Sedlak and James Preece all beat Michael Gray inside the first 13 minutes, before Frankie Harvey managed to reply on a Raiders powerplay.

But Jordan Powell put Cardiff 4-1 up at the first break, before Jakub Klima netted powerplay and shorthanded goals either side of Preece’s second for the hosts in the middle period.

Harvey cut the gap to one with 11 minutes remaining, but Raiders could not force an equaliser.

Oliver said: “Cardiff was one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played. We’ve been playing some great hockey over the last month and we took that into Saturday’s game.

“We didn’t have the best start to the game and it took us until being 3-0 down to start playing our game.

“We were playing some very good hockey and should have walked out of Wales with both points.”

The threadbare Raiders squad, who travelled without AJ Smith and JJ McGrath, saw Billy Phillips ejected with six minutes remaining, after collecting his second 10-minute misconduct penalty of the night.

And despite removing goalie Gray for the last 21 seconds for an extra skater in a late bid of an equaliser they returned empty handed.

Olvier added: ““With only nine guys it didn’t help with some of the calls made on the night.

“It was very frustrating as we were the better team on the night.”
