National League: Chelmsford 2 Raiders 2
Raiders saw hopes of a memorable triumph shattered by a late Chelmsford equaliser before tempers boiled over on the buzzer at the Riverside Ice Arena last night.
Smarting from their 7-3 loss at Bracknell 24 hours earlier, Raiders got their noses in front against their Essex rivals when Frankie Harvey struck on a first-period powerplay.
And the scoreline remained unchanged until the 55th minute, as Ben Clements and Euan King held firm in their respective nets, although Chieftains lost player-coach Gary Clarke to a match penalty for spearing JJ Pitchley.
Raiders, who were without Lithuanian import Andrius Kaminskas, doubled their advantage when Shaun Yardley struck but former Romford junior Grant Bartlett gave the home side hope when halving the deficit 80 seconds later.
And Chieftains got back on terms with just 48 seconds left in the match as Ross Brears beat King before the gloves came off at the end.
Chelmsford’s Daniel Volrab was handed a cross-checking minor, as well as a match penalty for roughing along with teammates Brears, John Connolly and Bartlett, while Raiders saw David Oliver, JJ McGrath, Billy Phillips and Charlie Phillips given match penalties for roughing and Yardley picked up a game misconduct for being third man in, on top of his own match penalty for roughing.
Over 300 minutes in penalties were handed out in total by referee Matt Thompson and Raiders will feel the pinch as suspensions kick in for their long trip to Cardiff on Saturday.
Captain Jason Buckman said: “A good performance after last night’s game. A point is a point in that barn.
“The fans as ever were immense in that corner of the rink. So good to hear.”
