Essex Cup clash at Rom Valley Way

Thursday (8pm)
Essex Cup 2nd leg
Romford Raiders v Chelmsford Chieftains
(Chelmsford lead 5-2)
Raiders chase their second piece of silverware this season as fierce rivals Chelmsford visit Rom Valley Way tonight.
Danny Marshall’s men lifted the South East Trophy last month, after winning all six matches in the newly formed competition.
But they need to overturn a three-goal deficit from the first leg of their county clash with the Chieftains to celebrate again this evening.
Raiders fell foul of referee Yurij Solosjovs at the Riverside, racking up 86 minutes in penalties as the hosts collected just 12 minutes.
Matt Turner put Romford ahead inside a minute, but Danny Wright levelled on a Chieftains powerplay, as Andrius Kaminskas served a hooking minor, and Alan Green’s second period brace made it 3-1.
Jakub Klima and Danny Hammond (powerplay) widened the gap in the final session, before Marshall claimed a late consolation to keep his side’s hopes alive.
Raiders hold the edge in the derby battles so far this season, as they won both meetings on their way to lifting the South East Trophy silverware, as the four-game league series was evenly split.
They came out on top by the odd goal in nine when the sides met for the first time, but then saw their 14-game winning run end after a 4-2 defeat in the return.
Raiders sealed the South East Trophy with a 7-5 win in Chelmsford, then skated to an 8-5 victory before lifting the silverware on home ice.
And, after losing their long unbeaten home record in a 4-1 defeat last month, they bounced back to claim a 5-2 win a week later and are now two points clear at the top of the ENL Division One table with only seven games remaining.
With the chance of another piece of silverware on Saturday, as Romford visit Isle of Wight in the second leg of their Raiders Challenge, and a key league clash against Invicta on Sunday, Marshall’s men could do with a lift tonight.
And the majority in a big Rom Valley Way crowd will be hoping they get it.
Kevin Mitchell has high hopes that his dream fight, a clash with WBO lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns, will take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground on the night of July 14.
