Lots of positives says Buckman
Raiders captain Jason Buckman was delighted to see his side begin their new National League Division One season with a 6-1 win over Solent at the weekend.
GB under-20 international JJ Pitchley netted a hat-trick in the win, while player-coach Danny Marshall scored twice and long-serving Grant Taylor was also on target at the club’s new Lee Valley home.
Newcomers Nathan Pollard and Dwayne Newman also made it onto the scoresheet with assists, while young defenceman Charlie Phillips was named man of the match for a mature display on the blue line.
Buckman said: “It was the perfect kind of game for us to start with.
“Solent are the type of team to never stop skating and we knew they would play until the end.
“It was a bit scrappy at times but that’s expected with lines still gelling and guys getting their timing back after the summer break.
“The young guys are already showing they can step up when needed which is good to see, playing with lots of confidence.”
Raiders are sure to face toughest tests over the course of the campaign, starting with next Sunday’s trip to Invicta.
The Dynamos snapped up former Raiders trio Juraj Huska, Ryan Giles and goalie Chris Douglas during the summer, along with ex-Chelmsford forward Danny Hammond.
And they are seen as one of the favourites for honours in 2013-14, along with the defending champion Chieftains.
Buckman added: “I’m pretty sure Marshall will have us working on a few things this week in training.
“It was far from a perfect performance (against Solent), but there are plenty of positives to take out of it too.
“Away in Invicta will be a tough test on Sunday so maybe we will see where we really are with that game.”
