Goalie Bainborough joins club

London Raiders have announced the signing of goalie Ryan Bainborough, following the departure of George Alley.

Bainborough, 23, joins the Lee Valley-based club after a short spell out of the sport but has plenty of experience.

Standing six foot tall, Nottingham-born Bainborough played his junior hockey at Peterborough and was soon called into the England under-16 squad.

He played a handful of games for Slough Jets in the English Premier League, while also icing for their second string in the National League, and then spent two seasons with Chelmsford where he shared duties with Ben Clements.

A persistent injury restricted him to just two appearances for Oxford last season, but he is expected to give useful support to Michael Gray.

A club statement said: “Raiders have certainly experienced Ryan and have blamed him on more than one occasion for losing us the game!

“Ryan is a well-rated goaltender and we look forward to seeing him in the sort of form that frustrated us when we played against him.

“It is also good after so recently losing George Alley to continue to provide Michael Gray with some more competition for the starter role and we feel Ryan will definitely push Michael every training session and every game.

“Welcome to the Raiders Ryan. We suspect you will be a popular addition.”

Ironically enough, Raiders face Bainborough’s two most recent clubs this weekend when they will look to snap a three-game losing streak against Chelmsford in the cup on Saturday, before travelling to Oxford for a league match the following evening.
