National League Div 1: Raiders 5 Bracknell 2

Raiders skated off with the points after a comfortable victory over the Hornets at Lee Valley last night.

The home side were without Frankie Harvey and JJ McGrath, leaving them with just nine skaters, but took an early lead on the powerplay.

Bracknell’s Jordan Gregory was binned for roughing in the fourth minute and Jakub Klima converted while Raiders enjoyed the numerical advantage, after player-coach Danny Marshall and AJ Smith had combined.

The scoreline remained unchanged until just past the midway point, before Raiders doubled their lead.

Charlie Phillips and Joshua Smith had been given double minors for roughing before Marshall put his side 2-0 up.

And that quickly became 3-0 as Smith converted just 24 seconds later, as Marshall and Tom Davis had combined.

Smith struck again before the second break to widen the gap further, as Michael Gray held firm in the Raiders net to raise hopes of a shut out.

Defenceman David Oliver put the home side 5-0 up with his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute, but a delay of game call against Marshall gave Bracknell a late powerplay chance and they made it count.

Danny Hughes denied Gray his clean sheet with just over three minutes remaining and struck again soon after for a consolation second.

But Raiders had done more than enough to take the win and will look for their third in a row when they welcome Streatham Redskins to east London for a rearranged fixture next Saturday, before champions elect Chelmsford visit the following night.

Scorers, Raiders: AJ Smith 2+1 Jakub Klima* 1+3 Danny Marshall 1+2 David Oliver 1+1 Tom Davis 0+2 Charlie Phillips 0+1.

Bracknell: Danny Hughes 2 Ryan Handisides 0+1 Tony Barclay 0+1.

Penalty minutes: Raiders 14 Bracknell 20.
